This guide explains how to create, configure, and connect an L2TP VPN client on a Windows computer.
Prerequisites
Before setting up the VPN, ensure you have the following:
- Server Name or Address: The public IP address of the router.
- Username: Your VPN username.
- Password: Your VPN authentication password.
- Shared Secret: The VPN shared password.
- Search Domain: The company Active Directory domain name.
Steps to Set Up an L2TP VPN
1. Open VPN Settings
- Open the Settings app on your Windows 10 computer.
- Navigate to Network & Internet.
2. Configure the VPN
- On the left-hand menu, click VPN.
- Click Add a VPN connection.
- Enter the following details:
- VPN Provider: Windows (built-in).
- Connection Name: Choose a name to recognize the VPN in the future.
- Server Name or Address: Enter the public IP address of the router (e.g.,
21.31.41.221
). - VPN Type: Select L2TP/IPsec with pre-shared key.
- Pre-Shared Key: Enter the shared secret password.
- Username: Input your VPN username.
- Password: Enter your VPN password.
Steps to Connect to the VPN
1. Open the System Tray
- On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click the Internet/Wi-Fi symbol.
2. Select and Connect to the VPN
- At the top of the panel that appears, locate your VPN by the name you set earlier.
- Click the VPN name and then click Connect.
3. Enter Credentials (If Required)
- If you did not specify a username and password during setup, you will be prompted to enter them now.
- Once entered, the VPN will establish a connection.
