Prerequisites
Before setting up the VPN, ensure you have the following information:
- Server Address: The public IP address of your company’s VPN server.
- Account Name: Your VPN username.
- Password: Your VPN authentication password.
- Shared Secret: The VPN shared password for machine authentication.
Steps to Set Up L2TP VPN on macOS
1. Open Network Preferences
- Go to System Preferences > Network.
2. Add a New VPN Connection
- In the Network window, click the + button at the bottom-left corner.
- Configure the following:
- Interface: Select VPN.
- VPN Type: Select L2TP over IPsec.
- Service Name: Enter a descriptive name (e.g., "Company VPN").
- Click Create.
3. Configure the VPN Settings
- Enter the following details in the main configuration screen:
- Server Address: Enter the VPN server address.
- Account Name: Enter your VPN username.
- Click Authentication Settings and enter:
- Password: Your VPN account password.
- Shared Secret: Enter the VPN shared secret.
- Click OK to save.
4. Advanced Settings
- Click Advanced in the main configuration screen.
- Tick Send all traffic over VPN connection to ensure secure routing.
- Click OK to return to the main window.
5. Apply and Save Settings
- Click Apply in the bottom-right corner to save all changes.
Connecting to the VPN
Using Network Preferences
- In System Preferences > Network, select your VPN connection from the list.
- Click Connect to establish the connection.
Using the Menu Bar
- Enable quick access to the VPN by checking Show VPN status in menu bar in the VPN settings.
- Use the VPN icon in the top-right menu bar to connect or disconnect easily.
